the selected attribute should be removed from options elements and instead be
set in the parent select element. its pretty retarded to set it in the child
element of the element you will read the value from. other than that 0
complaints from me.

Unfortunately there's not much we can do to change this API, it's been implemented and shipped for over a decade now. :-(
