What's wrong with

<details>
  <summary><output>actual result</output></summary>
  formula/calculation
</details>

?
Comment 2 JTK 2014-11-28 21:23:41 UTC
"The details element represents a disclosure widget from which the user can obtain additional information or controls." [1] Therefore the <output> must not be part of the <details>, if it is the main content of the page.

(And: The formula output as well, because it depends on the input. In your code, the calculation is not part of <output>.)

Can you elaborate on why you think the sentence you quote implies the conclusion you draw? I don't follow.
Comment 4 JTK 2014-12-09 07:12:30 UTC
I am sorry, the sentence does not imply this. My understanding of "disclosure" was wrong. I should have checked earlier (but have not even doubted it).
Comment 5 Ian 'Hixie' Hickson 2014-12-19 23:01:51 UTC
Does that mean you're ok with comment 1's suggestion of what to do?
Comment 6 JTK 2014-12-20 10:52:00 UTC
Yes, I am. Thank you!
Comment 7 Ian 'Hixie' Hickson 2014-12-23 00:00:45 UTC
Great, thanks!
