The first example of accumulators in 18.6 acknowledges that it doesn't work, saying "This example assumes that in streaming mode, string(.) is permitted for a leaf node (requiring some lookahead). This is not currently the case."

The example has been fixed by binding the value of the element to a variable, making the code streamable.
