The assertions

 <assert>/true</assert>

are causing XPDY0002.  I think they were meant to assert that the XML was <true />.

You're expected to evaluate the <assert> expression with the result document as context node. (This is slightly different from QT3 which uses a variable, $result. The reason is that with XSLT there's always a result document which is a single item, not a sequence).
