As discussed in bug 15150, the poem example uses markup to describe the rendered output. This is confusing since the output is not markup. The example should use an annotated diagram instead.

Looking at this again I think the phrase "as if it was this markup" is fine; I removed a note about UA styles, which are obviously implied by "as if it was this markup", in <https://dvcs.w3.org/hg/webcomponents/rev/9cb2dca32e6b>
