Description Michael Cooper 2011-07-28 19:52:06 UTC
Section 4.8.1.1 Requirements for providing text to act as an alternative for images http://www.w3.org/TR/html5/embedded-content-1.html#alt is redundant with and has partially conflicting advice from the separate document, HTML5: Techniques for providing useful text alternatives http://www.w3.org/TR/html-alt-techniques/. To address this, please:

# Remove from the HTML specification the section 4.8.1.1 Requirements for providing text to act as an alternative for images.
# In the HTML specification 4.8.1 The img element, change the sentence "The requirements on the alt attribute's value are described in the next section." to "Recommendations for optimal values of the alt attribute are available in external resources, such as [Techniques for providing useful text alternatives]". The bracketed content should be a link to http://www.w3.org/TR/html-alt-techniques/.

Marking as WONTFIX. If anyone is interested in pursuing this, the way to proceed is by providing new information (examples here: http://dev.w3.org/html5/status/new-information-status.html )

I am finsshing off the edits that will (hopefully) fully cover off the remaining issues. Once done (expect to complete this week) I will close the bug.

Status: partially accepted
Change Description: Changes have been made to the extensive guidance available in the HTML specification for the provision of text alternatives using the alt attribute while retaining the core requirements for the use of the alt attribute.

http://www.w3.org/html/wg/drafts/html/master/embedded-content-0.html#alt

Rationale: The HTML specification is the appropriate place to document the normative requirements for the use an HTML attribute. It is also an appropriate place to provide guidance on how authors should apply those requirements
