Meeting minutes

Meta-issue: update WPT to cover Pointer Events Level 3 w3c/pointerevents#445 / https://github.com/w3c/pointerevents/issues?q=label%3Aneeds-wpt+

PLH: i have a task to make a list of all new features and their WPTs. i'm also planning to add links in the spec itself in the right places

PLH: hitting some respec shortcomings, but working around it

PLH: let me know if this slows you down

Patrick: going through the 2 that we still have marked as needs-wpt:

Patrick: w3c/pointerevents#534

Mustaq: no progress from me...YET

Patrick: next w3c/pointerevents#509

Olli: there's a comment from me ... somewhere (bugzilla?) where I asked Masayuki to write a test

<smaug> https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1965118

Olli: that's the equivalent on bugzilla .... he's testing all the possible weird cases

Olli: pointerrawupdate should be shipping in Firefox 140

Olli: current nightly, so should release in... June?

Olli: confirming pointerrawupdate is enabled by default

ACTION: mustaq to address #534, olli to check with masayuki for #509

Any particular new issues filed? https://github.com/w3c/pointerevents/issues

Olli: I think Masayuki filed an interesting recent one...

<smaug> w3c/pointerevents#508 (comment)

Olli: thats mainly question for you Mustaq. Masayuki changed Firefox behaviour to follow Chrome behaviour...

Mustaq: spec/implementation was written more in a mouse-centric view. there is some hack there

Olli: it's also hacky in Firefox, but yeah there is a compat issue

ACTION: Mustaq to review latest on #508

Patrick: btw I changed labels in our issue tracker ... what used to be "future" is now "v4" (as the future is now)

Patrick: but we're not committing to doing them of course, we can still kick them into longer grass / close

PLH: i'd advise not to rush into doing v4 stuff while we're still in CR for v3

Patrick: any other issues? latest from Masayuki seem to be edge cases, but don't think we need to try to sneak them into v3

Olli: the dragstart one #552 I think is clear, just that it's defined in HTML spec rather than PE

[discussion on other issues]

<smaug> Just FYI, interop-25 (even though the url has 2023 in it) https://wpt.fyi/results/pointerevents?label=master&label=experimental&aligned&view=interop&q=label%3Ainterop-2023-events

TPAC 2025

<smaug> oh, I'll be at https://webengineshackfest.org/ in 2 weeks

Patrick: just mentioning that it looks almost certain that I *will* be physically at TPAC, so worth exploring further if there are any other groups we want to meet with/discuss things (for those coming, I believe Olli is also planning to be there)

Olli: yes

Patrick: I was thinking for instance Internationalisation and/or CSSWG on the topic of logical values for touch-action - we have my naive draft PR from ages ago, would be good to get feedback from them on whether we're on right track

Rob: another interesting discussion would also be panning with mouse and how that could be accommodated through touch-action

Patrick: is that in context of CSS-based carousels?

Rob: not necessarily tied to them, but yes authors will likely want to use that capability in combination with carousels

Patrick: excellent, for next meeting, I'll start jotting down some more fleshed out ideas of which groups we should ask/approach about possible quick meetings while at TPAC. deadline is... 20 June I believe, to let organisers know about group meetings

Patrick: as ever, thank you all - particularly thank you to Philippe for the work on the spec linking to WPTs. catch you next time
