Jan: We have 25 or so members of
the group
... We had our first meeting and 5 or 6 people came, including
people in Japan and EU
... We're trying to set up the group with people who have
expertise in internationalization
... Then that group and this COGA subgroup will figure out how
to work together

Jan: We spent time discussing the
group's short name (Global Inclusion) which doesn't reflect its
focus on internationalization
... We're trying to get people to vote on whether to change the
short name
... We will continue that discussion at the next community
group on May 1
... We moved the time up to 9am Eastern instead of 10am
Eastern
... I also need to pull together a spreadsheet to talk about
times for the community group to meet
... One of my action items is to ask the internationalization
task force to see what times they have found to work
... I have talked to people and found that it's confusing to
have the meetings be held at different times
... It's going to be inconvenient for some people because of
the many time zones
Jan: Katy and I went through the
list
... We flagged the patterns in Column C that we think needs
attention from the internationalization community group
... This is one of the biggest pieces of work we need the
community group to do
Julie: Great for the community group to start working on this. No WCAG 3 draft outcomes are ready to review yet.
Jan: Katy and I met an hour at a
time and probably would get through 8 or 9 patterns at a
time.
... The first pass is binary question: Does this pattern have
internationalization concerns or not?
... Maybe we could pair people up by geography to review and
then we could do a cross-comparison?
... Katy and I have 6 or 7 meetings just to get this binary
question answered
Julie asked if we could prioritize the 4.4 objective that correlates to Clear Language and also the Error and Help objective
Jan: I will send the editable
version to Julie, John, and Jennie and ask to highlight in
column A so I can create a different doc for those
specifically
... I was thinking about sending one doc with different tabs,
like a "Clear Language" tab
... So it's in one document in one link all the time
... That's the overview.
Jan: The internationalization
working group has not had a chance to review this description
yet
... We're trying to make sure we have representation from AG. I
believe Rachael is tagged as the representative.
... We're also trying to coordinate with the
internationalization working group.
... I was thinking of creating a shared Google space so we can
get a sense of which groups the members are part of.
... I was thinking of setting up a Google sheet with the
current members of the Community Group and ask them to list
which W3C groups they're part of, what part of the world they
live in, etc
... For example, I would say I'm part of COGA, as an
example
... This sheet could help us understand the collaboration
between this group, AG and the internationalization working
group
Julie: Sounds reasonable to me
Jan: It will help us get to know
each other better
... We had one person who just wanted to join the group and
learn.
... It would help me as a coordinator to understand who is
participating in the group.
Julie: Maybe ask a few quick questions, including what type of work do outside of W3c?
Jan: It could help us get to know
each other better to have a shared spreadsheet but some people
may want privacy. I'll ask internationalization.
... Surveys have low response rates.
... We don't have any key terms yet
... With respect to participation, this area had a lot of edits
from Addison in the internationalization working group.
... I'm a little concerned about off-putting people who think
they may not have a lot to contribute
... I want to encourage people to join.
... The bullets don't include my areas of expertise
... Maybe add a bullet about having a background in disability
and accessibility services? So we include generalists as well
as specialists?
Julie: Suggest rewording the "However" sentence so it sounds more welcoming/less exclusive.
Jan: I want people to feel like
they can join if they're interested in this topic.
... We need to make it more welcoming.
... I don't want to put too much emphasis on specific skills
because we don't want to make people feel unwelcome.
... Especially when we're trying to meld these 3 groups
together.
Tiffany: We may want to reorder
the bullets from least specific to more specific.
... The biggest thing is a passion for community, bringing
together people from different backgrounds and
communities.
... If we can evoke an emotion (passion), that can really be
helpful and can also help reduce impostor syndrome especially
among neurodiverse people
Jan: I think community is the larger umbrella because it means you don't want people excluded.
