Meeting minutes
<gautier> Agenda: Review Susan Neuhaus' Miro board and determine which use cases to develop
pbelfanti: last time we grouped things here. Next step is to identify wich ones we want to pursue. Personnally I find objects non book formats are interseting. May things happening and students exeprimenting (3d models for eductaion)
tzviya: when we spoke about supporting 3d models etc. we ran into need of a better definition of what is missing, what is the request
sue-neu: this board came from interviews, this request came from librarian/digital project manager at university press. Also involved in open publishing.
gautier: i see use case with books adapted for students where I can add a 3d model for tactile access to any graphic picture inside the book.
pbelfanti: we speak not only about epub but about what education wants from Web technologies.
sue-neu: I'm not sure about the process. We do a research, identify something missing, and after?
pbelfanti: this is to be reported to the publishing CG and studied there.
<tzviya> ack ,e
<Zakim> tzviya, you wanted to ask what the request from epub is
tzviya: so we can do 3d etc. on the web, it's not easy to add that to epub now.
Bill_Kasdorf: the output could be a community group note, "this is how to do that"
<tzviya> +1 rickj_
rickj_: one thing is cookbook style stuff (how to do), another is wishlist stuff and another again is how do we work with edTech.
JF: browsers vendors want to see use case, it's first a plugin widely downloaded than put them at work for supporting it natively.
JF: before going standard we need experiemental time and POC.
<Zakim> rickj_, you wanted to respond
Bill_Kasdorf: we are pre WG, we do incubation.
<Zakim> tzviya, you wanted to respond to rickj_
tzviya: Rick is right. Higher Ed isn't working with EPUB this way anymore. EPUB is part of the course package, but it's part of the package. What's in this package? It's an area that is ready to be standardized.
JF: An exemple of what we can do, I'm currently working on documentation about certifier report because it is not sufficiently determined what form it is to be, where does it live, do we have a template, etc.
JF: identifying problems is the first step, we do a list and start identifying how we can adress the need.
<JF> is ePub part of that solution Bill?
<CharlesL> @JF LIA in Italy is using certifierReport you may want to reach out to Gregorio to see how they are doing it.
Bill_Kasdorf: A course is not a book, books are ressources used in a course. I've seen a demo of a tool agregating complex and diverse materials that could be of interest for the persons here.
<JF> LOL - wordpress - a great platform for PoC 'plugins'
<Zakim> tzviya, you wanted to comment on courses and standards
sue-neu: 3d and interactive seems interesting to the group, I open it as an issue and we see were it goes.
pbelfanti: there could be iterations here, find missings parts, explore, see if there is something to be explained, back to the person who reported, see if it's sufficient or if more work needs to be done.
<JF> +1 to Wolfgang - this is one of the questions I have about where does a11y:certifierReport live?
<JF> (i.e. the security question)
wolfgang: interactions in epub because it means communicating with servers can be a security issue. Another aspect is interoperability. Is there a solution, yes, no, is it commercial or free to use, is it specific plugin or browser engine
<Bill_Kasdorf> +1 to JF
JF: do we have solution, best practices etc. for the security threat raised by epub comunicating with external ressources?
<sue-neu> +1 JF
pbelfanti: we can prepare use cases for next meeting.
