Meeting minutes
<tzviya> Date: 2022-12-06
Equity
tzviya: conversation started at TPAC about equity
… right now, lots cooking in equity subcommittee of AGWG
Jennifer: lots of work that needs to happen, particularly in managing expectations
Ombuds
tzviya: we need to prepare a package and tidy it up, ready to present
… who is doing the next steps?
… Chris and I are willing to help push it to the management
Sheila: wondering how this ties in to budget -we talked to Wendy
Chris: we should wrap it up and see if we can match budget
Tzviya: [proposes structure for proposal]
tzviya: I can work on a slide deck
… likely cancel next meeting (will check in with Wendy), and we can pick this up in January
Running Better Meetings
<tzviya> https://
tzviya: should we talk about this now, or wait for Wendy?
Jennifer: we should talk about with Wendy here.
<tzviya> https://
Jennifer: I do think we need to add considerations for cognitive
… I'm happy to help
tzviya: Wendy will join us shortly

tzviya: I put in this link: Igarashi put in some recommendations for how to improve some things for ESL participants.
… there are some good ideas in this
sheila: looks great. the only thing giving me pause is there's a lot of language around "making space for all parties".
… seems like this is intended for general conflicts that should be worked through, not conflicts generated by one person. E.g. where one position is harmful/conducive to positive conduct
… I've seen gaps when ppl assume "all positions are equally valid"
Wendy: the first training goes through some of this. I can expand
<Zakim> tzviya, you wanted to mention westerness
chris: +1 to previous mentions. Love the social media commentary. Not clear when the open discussion is vs presentation.
tzviya: we might want to run these slide past some members in Asian cultures
… they might have a different take on the conflict/collaboration.
wendy: the goal for the second session is to be open discussion, but maybe timeboxed, punctuation with presentation
chris: [side conversations point]
tzviya: might be worth mentioning that the goal of W3C is to achieve consensus
wendy: definitely going to add more callbacks to the first training from the second
… make sure your tools are accessible
… can add sidechats/consensus building, need to make sure to define consensus (everyone can live with, not unanimity)
Annette: in part 1 where we define effectiveness would be a good place to put this
… can break down modes of communication, etc a bit more
Jennifer: regarding tools, it seems like this has grown over time
… and some of these tools have accessibility or other issues
… have proposed training
… group should be open to reviewing its processes
… and/or doing training to its members
chris: +1; reviewing processes, defining criteria to measuring processes.
wendy: would love to take this on. Some tools are challenging in various spaces, like Github
… getting people to scribe is getting harder and harder, but autotranscription is getting better and better.
… could we start relying on autotranscription
JITSI, OpenAI Whisper are mentioned
Jennifer: I'd like to meet in two weeks
Tzviya: Wendy will be away, but we can discuss update materials
Sheila: I'd also like to discuss the experience of and cultural norms around the AC forum
tzviya: thanks all!
