Agenda Review, Membership & Announcements

https://gist.github.com/AutoSponge/f68870d00b73eaccecb451eef4c3da1d

https://w3c.github.io/aria/#aria-braillelabel

(discussion of how Braille, label, and our spoken HTML work might continue to collide)

question: does Braille and language interact in ways we haven't considered?

janina: it's at least worth talking about in the DPUB area

janina: there's work that I haven't followed closely enough for Braille and music notation. it could be really helpful for music education

Action Items

janina: try to conclude meetings with 5-10 minutes left for whatever

https://www.w3.org/WAI/APA/task-forces/pronunciation/track/actions/open

janina: hoping to have a draft of the i18n action for next week

Github Issues and examples

https://github.com/w3c/pronunciation/issues/113

we might need to bring this up (embedded languages, creoles, etc.) with the linguists (i18n) so we can address these cases

the TTS engines may not have enough voice packs to cover these cases so filling in with IPA pronunciation could be an option

NeilS: loan words (like French words) or even UK English (e.g., aluminum) show a generic issue pattern that needs to be addressed

<Sarah_Wood> I just found this link to a Hawaiian language center: https://manoa.hawaii.edu/catalog/schools-colleges/hawaiian/kawaihuelani/

in general, native, oppressed, and disappearing languages/cultures should be considered in our annotation of language

https://github.com/w3c/pronunciation/issues/112

https://github.com/w3c/pronunciation/issues/111

Other Business

janina: question for Mark: I saw something about Cambridge assessments, should we try to recruit them?

janina: they mentioned having to record things because TTS would not pronounce it correctly

mhakkinen: I'll look into them

<NeilS> They have computer based exams: https://www.cambridgeenglish.org/exams-and-tests/what-to-expect-on-exam-day/computer-based/

mhakkinen: it may be helpful to also talk to Duolingo

https://icchp-aaate.org/

mhakkinen: I won't be able to go

the main conference is 3 days

NeilS: there's another conf called TPAC in the same city at the same time

talk about namespace collisions
