Meeting minutes

RAUR: status and review of draft.

jasonjgw: some leftover work from last week

jasonjgw: recent issues in email have been received

joconnor: we received some very new comments, but were mixed between XAUR and RAUR and had to be parsed out

<joconnor> https://github.com/w3c/apa/issues/167

comment was not to limit the number of windows that can be pinned

janina: we could simply say "pin one or more"

<joconnor> https://raw.githack.com/w3c/apa/8ab19c819b6f22043334c2559ac0b9e72d61e549/raur/index.html#window-anchoring-and-pinning

scott_h: this may just be fine as it is

<joconnor> Deaf and signing issues: Signing Avatar [XAUR] #168

<joconnor> https://github.com/w3c/apa/issues/168

this actually applies to RAUR

<joconnor> https://wfdeaf.org/news/resources/wfd-wasli-statement-use-signing-avatars/

issue around replacing live signers with avatars

joconnor: OK...this is actually a XAUR issue

joconnor: new use case around changing the size of the window for signing

janina: yes...that sounds good

<joconnor> Josh to add new req for User Need 1 window anchoring etc

<joconnor> New draft requirement: A user should have the ability to change the size of the window especially for sign language interpreters, certified deaf interpreters, and signing people.

<joconnor> https://github.com/w3c/apa/issues/177

video relay service and situation in the UK

JPaton: the text as explained in the email and discussed here sounds good

<joconnor> Ok to update Text and Video Relay Services section heading

<joconnor> https://raw.githack.com/w3c/apa/8ab19c819b6f22043334c2559ac0b9e72d61e549/raur/index.html#text-and-video-relay-services-vrs

janina: once edit is in place, then we will use the new snapshot to send out with a new CFC

Judy_: what about replying back to commenters first?

janina: unclear if that is better than just a straight CFC

joconnor: Have pinged Wendy already on her comments

Judy_: will touch base with Wendy in an upcoming meeting just to make sure

janina: don't think we have anything left that is controversial

<scott_h> Apologies: need to drop off to attend to famly matters

janina: will wait 24 hours and then issue a new CFC

janina: will probably run until Wednesday of next week

<scott_h> remote meetings update: made some offline progress, Judy and I to potentially discuss next week prior to RQTF

XAUR: open issues.

joconnor: new comments from COGA

joconnor: also, new comments from Wendy

<joconnor> Signing Avatars: https://github.com/w3c/apa/issues/168

<joconnor> https://wfdeaf.org/news/resources/wfd-wasli-statement-use-signing-avatars/

<joconnor> Here is what we have in the XAUR https://raw.githack.com/w3c/apa/6d5bf713d9d7c65ecda104c213ad47b0e98cfbe1/xaur/index.html#text-description-transformation

joconnor: The comment was that signing avatars were not recommended

janina: Would signing avatars be better than nothing?

Judy_: this may depend on the context of the meeting and who is involved

joconnor: There are contexts where this could be useful

joconnor: We are mostly talking about prerecorded information

<joconnor> Here is my overview and suggestion to Wendy and the group

<joconnor> https://lists.w3.org/Archives/Public/public-apa/2021May/0004.html

jasonjgw: craft a comment which mentions the anticipated further technology advancement

Judy_: all of this is at an early stage, so interested to make sure we hear from direct users and researchers

JPaton: What about prerecorded clips of signing humans?

JPaton: may want to differentiate between computer animated avatars and recorded human signers

<joconnor> Josh: Heres a preference for pre-recorded signing over avatars.

jasonjgw: given that XR environments will have 3d and enhanced AI, will this benefit signing avatars?

JPaton: Text itself does not convey emotion or emphasis, which is something that human signers can do well

JPaton: Because the user populations are very small, the ability to reach a large corpus for AI to draw from is difficult

janina: There is always a trade off between quality of access and amount (audio description is increasingly created from TTS)

janina: In immersive dynamic environments, prerecorded signing may have limited application

joconnor: need to get more input from users

janina: we need to do a joint call, but need to decide when

Judy_: a large number are find with meeting with us at our regular call

janina: need to develop a joint agenda

Judy_: they want to know more about our current work

<joconnor> Here is the APA project wiki

<joconnor> https://www.w3.org/WAI/APA/wiki/Project

<joconnor> RQTF

Judy_: the resource pages are often hard to follow

<joconnor> https://www.w3.org/WAI/APA/task-forces/research-questions/wiki/Main_Page

janina: We can look at better presenting and organizing these

jasonjgw: Remote meetings plus whatever remains of XAUR and RAUR for next week

janina: try to target the 19th for the joint meeting

janina: TPAC planning is also on the horizon
