Meeting minutes
MagnusF: receiving positive feedback internally and clearing some hurdles wrt open sourcing
Gunnar: VSC tools repo exists and ready
MagnusF: I've added nested namespaces, each can have its own attributes, events
… I have been working on tests as well
… cleaning up the python code and working on documentation for when I have approval
… there will be a dbus based C++ code generator as well
… protocol side we will be able to try things out
Gunnar: presumably from a parser
MagnusF: you run YAML through a schema validator and based on datatype definitions until it gets down to native types and structs
… it is really straightforward and only 5-600 lines of code
Gunnar: the schema checker may be a sticking point
MagnusF: it is permissive at present but might narrow that
Gunnar: how does this compare to VSS tools?
MagnusF: maybe some...
Gunnar: BMW has refactored a number of them recently based on any tree
… some are not yet converted to this new approach
… they're using a method set as deprecated for now
… not sure there is a major advantage but it is somewhat smart
… it can handle tree structures fairly well
MagnusF: I have it up right now and will look to see if I can adopt it
… does Franca use 'command', 'method' or...?
Gunnar: method
MagnusF: any differentiating if command (no return) is issued...
Gunnar: don't believe so
MagnusF: happy to have a better way to handle trees in python
… any feedback from CVII workshop?
Gunnar: not really, well no pushback on anything we put forward
… there were requests for copies of presentations to redistribute
MagnusF: like VSS we'll hear that others are interested through the grapevine
Gunnar: Franca just has interface which contains methods
MagnusF: nested namespaces to help align with W[xxxx]
… how is interface semantically different from package?
Gunnar: package name just reverse domain name
… I'll send over user guide
MagnusF: thanks, it has been awhile since I've read it
… any other topics for today?
Ulf: we need wider participation?
MagnusF: we only announced publicly last week
Ulf: but we have been running these meetings for awhile. we need more than one OEM
MagnusF: we don't have enough substance for people to evaluate at this point
… code is feature complete and accompanying documentation will help
Ted: typical of standards work you get a number of lurkers and few working to further it until you reach a proof of concept
… @@on other OEM, promotion within and outside W3C (eg analysts)
MagnusF: I have political landscape to figure out
… plus demonstrate value internally as part of that
Glenn: are we looking at cloud based interactions or direct to vehicle?
MagnusF: I think we agreed on both, I'm more interested in both. W3C interest would be vehicle to cloud
… main difference is you don't really trust the cloud security wise nor connectivity
Glenn: proof of concept would be good but we're not in that many vehicle platforms yet
[list of OEM and Tier 1s we know have implemented, some rumors of RFQ listing it with others]
Gunnar: CVII is getting interest
… data first will help
MagnusF: I know VSS doesn't have a serious competitor and as noted getting used by additional [unnamed] OEM
Gunnar: Bosch's code is going to be open sourced
(and related to Bosch/MS news)
[more discussion of industry trend, lack of alternatives to VSS]
MagnusF: everyong is talking about service based architectures but nobody is doing it yet
… our timing will be spot on
