<Lisa_Seeman> https://w3c.github.io/coga/techniques/index.html

<janina> Michael, I'm trying to dial your rednote.net extension. If you can answer, I might be able to bridge you that way.

<neilmilliken> I am calling you so it should not cost you

<janina> Shall I try again?

There are concerns that we appear to have two versions of the techniques document. This needs to be resolved.

<neilmilliken> so can you not click the link and dial in via PC

<neilmilliken> Conference ID: 81540127

Minor differences in the document - highlighting speech in synch was mentioned as missing by Lisa. We will use the online version but need to include the support for highlighted text with speech as this has been shown to help.

<scribe> ACTION: Lisa will add this research back into the paper [recorded in http://www.w3.org/2015/04/22-coga-minutes.html#action01]

<trackbot> Created ACTION-92 - Will add this research back into the paper [on Lisa Seeman - due 2015-04-29].

<JohnRochford_> Lewis resources are located in https://www.w3.org/WAI/PF/cognitive-a11y-tf/wiki/Research_sources

<Lisa_Seeman> can you hear

The group in London are reading through the Techniques document - those on the phone have been advised to speak up to help with multitasking and Lisa chairing the meeting.

Today the quality of the phone has been improved but those in London have been advised not to talk over each other.

John has mentioned the issue of Downs Syndrome appearing in the document and asked if he should change this to the agreed term of 'intellectual disabilities'

resolution: It has been agreed that the task force will use the term 'intellectual disabilities' rather than just use terms such as Down Syndrome or other specific types of intellectual disability.

The group went to debate the difference between the cognitive disabilities and intellectual disabilities - Lisa pointed out that intellectual is part of the cognitive.

Lisa has added this as an issue to be discussed later

Lisa asked how do we deal with the structure - Lisa will redo

<Lisa_Seeman> ACTION: lisa to make the stucture consitent of the techneques [recorded in http://www.w3.org/2015/04/22-coga-minutes.html#action02]

<trackbot> Created ACTION-93 - Make the stucture consitent of the techneques [on Lisa Seeman - due 2015-04-29].

<ayelet_s> my audio is bad - checking if calling again will solve it

Lisa questioned whether the document should have a General heading for techniques (Section 2) that cross disability then have some (Section 3) that are specific to certain disabilities such as symbols for AAC users. This is working draft document that will eventually be adapted to suit WCAG type structure.

<ayelet_s> back on

Steve commented that there may be judgments made on the level and type of elements included in the structure but what it was felt that it should be usable even at this stage

The discussion went on to success criteria for error prevention - pass and fail criteria

Michael commented that there was no strict need for pass and failure examples - but there are many cases when failures are fairly contextual. It is useful to document them - John suggested that we need to focus on success examples and just do failure examples when needed - failure examples rather than failure techniques.

Michael stressed the need to take care when offering success and failure examples

Lisa suggested that the need to have 'less features' as another section as this has been missed from the list - could be specific to a type of disability such as dementia. - may need personalisation but the debate went on to say could this come under 'Help the User Focus' but then Lisa pointed out that there is a difference between de-cluttering and offering less features

It was agreed that there should be a sub section that has the title 'less features' to take account for these differences and the impact they have on certain users

Tony pointed out that with correct tagging these issues around not finding features in a de-cluttered page the problems may be solved

Apologies - it needs to be 'fewer features' - John kindly pointed out.

Lisa went on to User Testing and these techniques - Lisa proposed that as we go through the gap analysis with do user testing for the techniques - where we are not sure how useful the technique might be.

Michael pointed out that this could be a research issue

Steve asked about the tags - Lisa pointed out that at the moment they are not needed - possibly also omit the headings for examples at present - John said it would be good not to overwhelm people.

It was agreed that we get a working document out which is clear of these items as soon as possible.

<Lisa_Seeman> https://www.w3.org/WAI/PF/cognitive-a11y-tf/wiki/Numbers_and_the_Web

The techniques that are missing at present are around Numbers. This was work completed by Neil and E.A. as an issue paper

<Lisa_Seeman> https://www.w3.org/WAI/PF/cognitive-a11y-tf/wiki/Numbers_and_the_Web

<Lisa_Seeman> https://www.w3.org/WAI/PF/cognitive-a11y-tf/wiki/Syntax_for_adaptable_symbols_for_links_and_buttons

There is a need to make techniques for the numbers paper with adaptable representation for symbols etc. Need to be able to pull in support for the terms but Neil pointed out that in everyday life there is a need to have explanation for the general representation of numbers for example if a person sees 08.15 on the web it is explained as being 'now' or in half an hours' time etc.

Lisa pointed out that there is a need for explanations for terms such as percentage - so when some says 'there is a high percentage of ...' needs explanation.

John mentioned that it might be possible to have a default version and then offer an 'easy read' version.

<ayelet_s> could we have a technique of adding an explanatory tag whenever a mathematic concept or term is mentioned?

<ayelet_s> (and have the person making the site provide the explanation)

Lisa pointed out that there are techniques for dyscalculia - so you can replace complex idea around Mathematical concepts with a helpful description. Tony also suggested the idea of hover over say 9 over 10 and it comes up with 'almost all'

Lisa suggested three versions of the technique - option to have a number with a text or image option, ARIA approach with a 'numbers free' option and the number concept that can be interpreted by the browser and the final option is an ontology - that would be very flexible and address localisation and cognitive levels etc. The latter would take resources to develop

Steve mentioned the link with the ARIA tags discussed by Leonie in her presentation at CSUN.

It was agreed that it would be hard to go down the ontology route so it was agreed that the technique could include the two techniques that include an alternative to number representation - general technique - then have a specific technique that may not suit all but allows for ARIA to be used to create a 'number free' option - this could suit those with dyscalculia for example

<janina> I need to reboot

<Lisa_Seeman> scribe: neil

<neilmilliken> action; neil & lisa add number techniques to the techniques document

<Lisa_Seeman> were tecnolgies alow make number fiels sand selecions interoprab;le with user application 9more aria tags to follow

<janina>

<neilmilliken> we will need a page of techniques that are new and not in current Gap analysis

issue papers

<neilmilliken> Lisa - all of the issues will need review to make conclusions more precise. They have now been ported into a nice editors draft format

<neilmilliken> Lisa We know that there is still more work to be done in reviewing and amending these

<Lisa_Seeman> https://www.w3.org/WAI/PF/cognitive-a11y-tf/wiki/Gap_Analysis_Issue_Papers

<neilmilliken> Wiki lists the suggested issue papers. Lisa asking which ones do we still need for the Gap analysis

<Lisa_Seeman> please mute you misic?

<Lisa_Seeman> ok

<Lisa_Seeman> thanks

<neilmilliken> things we have not addressed - Attention and distractions?should we have a user setting at OS level that can stream line the distractions from different apps.

<neilmilliken> Mike Pluke - coming to an conclusion about optimal solution could be tricky

<neilmilliken> ACTION: lisa to add Mike's issue paper [recorded in http://www.w3.org/2015/04/22-coga-minutes.html#action03]

<trackbot> Created ACTION-94 - Add mike's issue paper [on Lisa Seeman - due 2015-04-29].

<neilmilliken> Lisa - what do we do with help scaffolding?

<neilmilliken> EA it's a technique for graded levels for help

<neilmilliken> Issue paper looking at different types of help?

<neilmilliken> Mike Usefulness is dependent on context

<neilmilliken> Tont - pop up help is often hard to close

<neilmilliken> Lisa we have this in techniques

<neilmilliken> EA is help content any different from other content and do we need different rules to apply or use our recommendations?

<neilmilliken> John - I take exception to tool tip - can we say on demand help by machine or human as tool tips dont work on mobile

<neilmilliken> John R on demand help expresses the need

<neilmilliken> it should be context sensitive no matter what it is

<neilmilliken> Lisa - maybe we need an issue paper on how mobile handles tool tips

<neilmilliken> John It's not our responsibility to determine how it;s done

<neilmilliken> Lisa We need to be creating a roadmap of how things are going to work - part of the roadmap will be techniques part of it will be issues paper

<neilmilliken> tony D tool tips in applications and web pages are not the same thing

<neilmilliken> Tony D Tooltip is a title attribute

<neilmilliken> EA major problem with audio clutter

<neilmilliken> John we need to be always thinking of moble as that is where the most users are

<neilmilliken> Mike an aim should be to get access to information without interfering in with the interface

<neilmilliken> Lisa We need to have a section on user agents and operating systems where it states need for mechanism for showing and hiding tooltips and help

<neilmilliken> Should it be at os or browser level

<neilmilliken> Lisa 2 Suggestions to deal with notifications and showing help.

<neilmilliken> Lisa are we good with what we currently have with menus and navigation?

<neilmilliken> EA breadcrumbs should be repeated in ease of navigation techniques

<neilmilliken> Lisa we have an issue paper on web of things

<neilmilliken> How do we know when a person requires help

<neilmilliken> Lisa - leave for now

<neilmilliken> Attention and mobile?

<neilmilliken> EA is this about alerts or distractions of ringing phones? Merge with paper on attention and the web? How to turn stuff with mobile needs to be easy.

<neilmilliken> John have we addressed multi-modal deliveries of content? Options on how a person wants to receive the content. Options for how content is delivered,

<neilmilliken> Lisa that goes with personalisation

<neilmilliken> Steve & EA is it not covered by alternative formats

<neilmilliken> Lisa - no

<neilmilliken> EA in countries where literacy is low rich video content is common

<neilmilliken> Can users save preferences for modality.

<neilmilliken> Lisa I think that it should be an issue paper

<neilmilliken> Lisa it's lunchtime

<neilmilliken> Issue paper was added to the issue papaer page

Deliverables should fit in with Roadmap to make things easier

Need to expand on list in Roadmap Wiki.

Glossary of terms is needed

So common language can be used

terms, definitions etc

Wiki for now for ease of use/editing

Added to wiki as "Terms and Definitions"

<Lisa_Seeman> https://www.w3.org/WAI/PF/cognitive-a11y-tf/wiki/Roadmap

Like to include emotional disabilities, but not at this time\

<Lisa_Seeman> ?

Perhaps a phase two thing - but term clarification is needed

Context is also relevant - looking up emergency medical for example.

John - we may find techniques cover many things

John - there are many populations that are not necessarily cognitive impaired that may benefit from our techniques

Mike - comparison of WHO categories with what is covered by COGA - identify benefit groups

Phase two - comparison of WHO categories, Emotional etc added to Roadmap

Set schedules and next steps

setting schedules and next steps

User research moving ahead, references etc

John, Mike both have action items

Need to edit based on comments

Interoperable symbols

<Lisa_Seeman> for non verbal

interoperable symbols for no verbal

<Lisa_Seeman> https://www.w3.org/WAI/PF/cognitive-a11y-tf/wiki/Interoperable_symbols_for_non_verbal

<neilmilliken> have you seen http://www.avazapp.com/

these are symbols used to communicate

some like Blyss are a language - symbols are constructed with a grammer

These are pictograms

They are used by people with limited speech, but can process langugae

another approach is to use a series of icons

<neilmilliken> http://www.ted.com/talks/ajit_narayanan_a_word_game_to_communicate_in_any_language?language=en

Other people have develomental language limitations

We have potential to make a large impact on people by enabling them the to communicate

Many symbol set are proprietary

Ryladog: OK

<Lisa_Seeman> https://www.w3.org/WAI/PF/cognitive-a11y-tf/wiki/Interoperable_symbols_for_non_verbal

there are open symblol sets but many use CC no commercial

https://www.w3.org/WAI/PF/cognitive-a11y-tf/wiki/Interoperable_symbols_for_non_verbal

this shows a potential way to link symbols to a concept -

but there are many issues of naming concepts across languages.

This uses HTML but other technologies may be relevent in wider use - eg RdF

This is for a specific context - where symbolic content has been authored as web content

for example as sentences made of 3 images, each will reference the concept intended by the author

then another user who prefers a different symbol set can have it translated to their symbol for each concept.

<JohnRochford> http://www.catedu.es/arasaac/

<EA> here is the link for ARASAAC http://www.arasaac.org - issue paper and strategies for use.

here is the link for ARASAAC http://www.arasaac.org - issue paper and strategies for use.

http://www.catedu.es/arasaac/ is a godd set of symbols that could be used as a concept set.

EA says they are working on a project that might be useful as an implementation

<Lisa_Seeman> https://www.w3.org/WAI/PF/cognitive-a11y-tf/wiki/Syntax_for_adaptable_links_and_buttons

<Zakim> MichaelC, you wanted to note changes in success criteria may not be on the table and to note ARIA and IndieUI - should this be a section on technologies? Probably add HTML at least

JSON scripts for preferences revisited

aira syntax sugestions

<Lisa_Seeman> https://www.w3.org/WAI/PF/cognitive-a11y-tf/wiki/Syntax_for_adaptable_links_and_buttons

<scribe> cancelled topic - we were thinking of implementation details which could be used as example

https://www.w3.org/WAI/PF/cognitive-a11y-tf/wiki/Syntax_for_adaptable_links_and_buttons

<Lisa_Seeman> the noun project

<Tony_Doran> https://thenounproject.com

The icons for symbols could be changed using CSS 0 aria selector and background image

Examples include https://thenounproject.com

note many symbols that are universally recognised do not make so much sense- eg floppy for save

some concern over users chosing to not show certain parts of page - eg offers

But that is already done for readability say

somethings like popup filtering are already covered by blockers

this is an addition way to mark up content to give richer user experiences

topics: need to define terms cognitive, intellectual and learning in glossary

https://www.w3.org/WAI/PF/cognitive-a11y-tf/wiki/Terms_and_Definitions

The complexity is regional variation either splits or lumps.

intellectual disability means low IQ

Techniques documents edits - use of symbol and icon to be consistent with our terms.

google translate

problem is when a site says 'use our site in Spanish' and use google translate. Not occaisional use.

So the site does not use a native speaker to translate but give no inidcation.

we will add a technique to make it clear

<scribe> ACTION: Lisa to restructure techniques page [recorded in http://www.w3.org/2015/04/22-coga-minutes.html#action18]

<trackbot> Created ACTION-100 - Restructure techniques page [on Lisa Seeman - due 2015-04-29].

voiceML

The issues is the timing - eg pauses lose people

Thanks and congrats to all. Espec John for coming from US and Neil for orgainising venue
