ACTION-1868 - Problems with error handling and options for variable

type handling

http://lists.w3.org/Archives/Public/public-forms/2013Oct/0002.html

[All about recovering from errors]

Erik: Error handling is a problem for us
... non cancellable exceptions mean no recovery
... Xpath expressions, binding errors
... ... You can do some static checks
... but as per the spec, there is no error recovery
... not great
... we try to improve on that
... for instance type errors
... and there is the question from Eric vd Vlist

There are three types of error: 1) Any XPath expression

scribe: (static or dynamic)
... 2) Binding errors
... 3) In actions for other reasons, especially with extensions
... The answer is simple, for the first two cases,
... we make bindings an empty nodeset, and so controls will not be bound.
... and we dispatch a cancellable event
... same if the type is wrong for a bind
... For actions, which are like a procedure, we interrupt the whole action block
... and dispatch a (new) event to the observer of the original event.
... and you can then catch that.

Steven: So you could get a loop of events?

Erik: Yes, but you can get that anyway.

Steven: If there are use cases, I think that this is a good approach; when we defined error handling originally we didn't contemplate being able to recover from errors in form specification
... So this means spec text, right?

Erik: Yes, I can do it if it makes sense.

Steven: Can we do it before last call?

Erik: It's already more fleshed out here than normal.
... I'll try for next week.

<scribe> ACTION: Erik to write spec text for error handling [recorded in http://www.w3.org/2013/10/02-forms-minutes.html#action01]

<trackbot> Created ACTION-1957 - Write spec text for error handling [on Erik Bruchez - due 2013-10-09].

Steven: Any objections?

[No].

RESOLUTION: Adopt Erik's error handling approach

AOB

Steven: We have one other with Nick, but here's not here.

Erik: I sent a message to Eric vd Vlist, but he hasn't replied yet.
