Fellowship Opportunity: Web / Graphic Designer

World Wide Web Consortium

The World Wide Web Consortium (W3C), the leading Web standards organization, seeks a Web / Graphic Designer to work as a W3C Fellow. W3C Fellows are supported* financially by one of W3C's Member organizations, and should expect to commit to W3C about 80% of their time for a typical period of 18-24 months. The primary responsibility for this Fellowship is for an individual with skills in graphic design and Web site design and management to improve the quality, appeal, consistency, and usability of the Web site and print materials of W3C.

Responsibilities

The Web / Graphic Designer will report directly to the Head of W3C Communications. The individual may reside anywhere, following an initial orientation period at a W3C Office. Most work will be conducted by telephone, email, and with Web technologies. As part of the W3C Team, you will travel internationally to periodic face-to-face meetings, typically 4-6 per year.

The primary responsibilities of the position include:

• Lead W3C Web site redesign projects. Consensus-building within the W3C Team is expected to be an important part of the successful management of these projects.
• Develop graphics for W3C materials, including specifications, brochures, and other Web and print resources.

Requirements

Candidates must possess the following qualifications:

• Graphic design skills, experience
• Web design and content management skills, experience.
• Familiarity with Web standards for graphics (PNG, SVG), style sheets (CSS), accessibility (Web Content Accessibility Guidelines),
• Technical expertise in Web standards.
• Facility with tools such as photoshop for both logo development and photo color correction.

The following are desirable qualifications:

• Fluency in a language other than English.
• Familiarity with design for mobile devices.
• Work experience in international, technical environments.
• Marketing experience, strong communications skills.

If joining is not a possibility at this time but your organization can provide you with financial support, you may write to the contact person for this announcement to express your interest as participation may be possible outside the Fellows program.
