Essential Problem:

• Computer doesn't understand  meaning ( "semantics") of Web pages
• Meaning conveyed by:
  • Human language (e.g., English, German, etc.)
  • Graphics, multimedia
  • Page layout
• Okay for human understanding
• Difficult for machine processing
