Encoding of IRIs

• On napkin, side of the bus: Irrelevant
• In document,... (e.g. XML): as characters, according to encoding of document
• Conversion to URIs: Use UTF-8 and %hh-escaping (+NFC)

=> reinforcing recommendation to use UTF-8 for new URI schemes (RFC 2718)

=> usable with many URI schemes: URNs, POP, IMAP, FTP, NEWS,..., XPointer

=> usable in many contexts: XML system identifiers, XLink, XML Schema anyURI,..., (X)HTML (most recent browsers)
