Hewlett-Packard Laboratories, Filton Road, Bristol (between New Road and Coldharbour Lane, just after Abbey Wood MOD site, to the North of the city). map
Hewlett-Packard Labs are approximately a 20 minute taxi ride (fare around UKP 12-20) from central Bristol to the north of the city (taxi drivers normally know where Hewlett-Packard is, but if not say that it's near 'Abbey Wood', the huge Ministry of Defence place). To get into HP you will need to know that Dave Reynolds is the contact person. You may need some ID. The taxi will take you to building three.
Bristol has an international airport, and train and bus stations with fast(ish) connections to London airports and other centres in England and Wales.
Try Streamline +44 (0) 117 926 4001 or Arches +44 (0) 117 923 2526 from Central Bristol or the station, and Euro taxis, +44 (0) 1454 32 01 01 from Hewlett Packard. If you'd like to share a taxi from central Bristol to get to HP Labs, email Libby Miller.
You can get a number 70 bus to HP Labs, from the centre of Bristol, getting off just before UWE (University of the West of England).
Trains run from Heathrow to Paddington every 15 minutes: the journey takes 15-20 minutes and costs 12-14 UKP single.
Trains run about every 30 minutes from London Paddington to Bristol Temple Meads (not Bristol Parkway unless you are staying near Hewlett Packard). You can check times on the Railtrack site. The cost is between 30 and 70 UKP return depending on times (you can check prices and book using the Train Line. The train takes between one and three-quarters and two hours. You can buy tickets on the train itself if you don't mind paying full fare. Hang on to your ticket because they often check them at the major stations when you get off, as well as checking them on the trains.
Bristol Temple Meads station is a little way out of the city. Its easy to get a taxi at the station and it costs 5-7 UKP to the University or Redland; maybe 15-20 UKP to get to Hewlett Packard.
GoByCoach.com does a 30 UKP return service from Heathrow, which takes 2-3 hours depending on traffic, departing about every hour and a half, from all terminals. You arrive at Marlborough Street Bus Station which is very central - about 4 UKP to the University area or Redland, 10-15 UKP to Hewlett-Packard. There are taxis at the back of the station.
The airport is a 15-20 UKP taxi ride from central Bristol, though you can get a Bristol Flyer Bus for 6 UKP return. If you get a taxi from the airport, there's a monopoly there - you have to order a taxi from the desk in departures.
The following hotels are available (there may be others too), including one near Hewlett Packard and several in central Bristol (near the University or Redland) which have pubs, restaurants etc close by.
You could also try the Visit Bristol site (example search). Look for something in Cotham, Redland or Clifton if you want to be central.
A workshop will be held 24 June 2002 to 26 June 2002 in Bristol, UK on EARL and image annotation tools in conjunction with the W3C WAI ER working group.
