OBJECTIVES

This task force of the Semantic Web Best Practices and Deployment WG is in support of the group's chartered aim of providing guidelines for users who want to combine usage of the W3C's RDF/OWL family of specifications and the ISO's family of Topic Maps standards.

Short term objectives

The short term objectives of the task force are to:

• Document strategies for representing topic maps using RDF/OWL and vice versa.
• Describe the pros and cons of existing approaches.
• Produce guidelines for transforming a topic map into an RDF/OWL representation and vice versa.
• Provide links to tools, applications, and papers on this topic.

Long term objectives

Longer term objectives of the task force may include:

• Proposing the guidelines described above for standardization in the W3C and ISO.
• Producing guidelines for using OWL to constrain topic maps.
• Producing guidelines for cross-querying RDF/OWL data and topic maps.

APPROACH

1. Create an overview of already-published proposals for RDF/TM mappings.
2. Choose one or more of these as a starting point for defining a methodology.
3. Identify gaps and weaknesses in the chosen approach.
4. Publish Best Practices guidelines describing the methodology and vocabulary.

SCOPE

The initial focus is on features defined in ISO 13250 Topic Maps. Other Topic Maps-related standards (such as TMCL and TMQL) may be considered at a later date.

DELIVERABLES

The following deliverables are expected to be produced:

• A Working Group Note describing the pros and cons of existing approaches. [Published 10 February 2006]
• A Working Group Note or Recommendation describing guidelines for transforming a topic map into an RDF/OWL representation and vice versa. [Latest Editor's Draft 30 June 2006]

TARGET AUDIENCE

Target Audience: Information owners and application developers who wish to integrate RDF and Topic Maps data.
