SUMMARY ======= Drop support for rel="" values based on the lack of interest from implementors and users. RATIONALE ========= This feature is used by virtually nobody. None of the major browsers display any user interface by default for this feature; the only major browser to even remotely support this feature is Opera, which hides its interface by default in recent releases. Hand-authored Web pages largely don't use it; the main use is from pages that are generated from templates that have been configured to use the feature (e.g. WordPress and automatically generated HTML man(1) pages). To save authors time that they might otherwise spend trying to work out how to use this keywords, we should just drop it. We should keep "prev" and "next" because they are used for other features (such as prefetching in Firefox and "fast forward" in Opera) and don't generally cause as much trouble as the others. DETAILS ======= Remove all prose relating to the following link types: index, up, first, last. POSITIVE EFFECTS ================ Puts an end to a chapter of HTML's life that has never been very popular. NEGATIVE EFFECTS ================ None. CONFORMANCE CLASS CHANGES ========================= Authors and Documents: Removes some rel="" keywords. User agents: Reduces the number of rel="" keywords for which support is suggested.
