Hi Paul,

If the W3C is confident that HTML5 will become a published specification, and that the relation (along with associated semantics) being registered is -- within reason -- going to be part of that specification, certainly. 

Also, be aware that alternate is already in use by Atom <http://www.ietf.org/rfc/rfc4287.txt>. I can't access the link Ian gave at the moment (whatwg.org appears to be down), so I can't say whether this is an issue.
