I cannot agree. We should not mix typographical presentation for
presentation sake and
typographical presentation for semantic reason.
While it may be not a big deal in chemistry, it is not so in math.

Or is E=mc2 same as E=mc<sup>2</sup>?
Do log4nm and log<sub>4</sub>n<sup>m</sup> differ?
