Re: lost-contact.mit.edu

OK, I have been in contact with the server admin who was active in the Reddit thread. He told me that the machine lost-contact did not actually host any files itself -- it was simply a web gateway for files hosted in the Andrew File System. (AFS) Anyone with an AFS client can browse what was hosted there by going to e.g. /afs/cern.ch/

I have made a complete download of the things under /afs/cern.ch/w3.org/, which I think is most or all of the stuff that is relevant to web history, and made an archive here: <https://archive.org/details/w3.org.tar.bz2>. I've also set up a new mirror where you can browse and link to the files there, <http://w3.infologie.co/>, though I encourage people to please set up their own mirrors to save my bandwidth, if possible. You can fix old, broken lost-contact URLs ones by replacing the "http://lost-contact.mit.edu/afs/cern.ch/w3.org/" with "http://w3.infologie.co/".
