Steven: I'm in the middle of an edit to get that done; it's a big one but I plan to have it finished this evening.

... the spec uses the notation in most places (for attributes) attrname (author-optional)
... I'd like to replace that with attrname?
... which I see Nick has done in one place.

Steven: Seems to be easier to read. We use ? for elements in content, so why not in attributes.
