I have sent a mail to the commenter asking for clarification (July 17). Response from Chris: Hi Becky, Thanks for taking the time to answer my comment. I had another look at H51 and F34 and I'll try to clarify what I meant. H51 means that you should use HTML table elements to markup tabular data. This is a good technique and should be in the guidelines. Taking another look at F34 I see that it does not apply to HTML but to plain text only. In my first reading I thought it applied to HTML too. My original interpretation was that it applied to the text within an HTML document and H51 already covered that so H51 and F34 were the same. Now I see they are different so please disregard my original comment. Just to be clear - I interpret F34 to mean that plain text documents can't have any tabular information. Is that the way you see it? After rereading the document, I'd like to make a comment regarding the "failures"... The techniques are grouped and labeled according to their technologies - HTML, CSS, plain text etc. The failures are not grouped this way - all failures are lumped together. I'd like to suggest that failures be grouped and labeled according to their technologies like the techniques. For example, F34 could be labeled something like T1 because it applies to plain text. In that way it will be easier to find the failures that apply to your technology. I realize we're past the comment cut off date but this didn't become apparent to me until now. Cheers, Chris End response I looked into ways to update the techniques to make the distinction clearer but couldn't find an obvious answer. The title of the technique does include the words "plain text" and the description does mention text content. Regarding Chris' suggestion of grouping the Failures under the technology, this is similar to LC-656 (although that proposes a different grouping) but the response to LC-656 will not satisfy Chris' request. I remember the group discussing grouping the failures and decided against it - but I don't remember the details - I think it was because we felt there weren't enough failures or it made it too confusting to have two technology specific lists. Resolution: Technique H51 is specific to HTML and F34 is specific to plain text. F34, Failure due to using white space characters to format tables in plain text content, does prevent tabular data in plain text content. An author using plain text must present the data in a format other than tabular (e.g. linear format).
