Transportation,Directions, Misc

From BWI take the Airport exit road to I-95 south (to Washington, DC). Take I-95 south until you reach the Washington Beltway, I-495, and take that west (a right exit, when I-95 goes left) in the direction of Silver Spring. Take I-495 about 6 or 7 miles to the I-270 exit to Frederick MD.

From Dulles Airport take the Dulles Access Road about 10 miles to the Beltway (I-495). Exit the Dulles Access Road north onto I-495 (follow the signs to Baltimore rather than to Richmond). Continue across the Potomac River into Maryland and in about 3 miles you will take a Left Exit onto I-270 to Frederick, MD.

From Reagan National exit onto the Parkway north or west, the signs will say to Washington, DC. Stay on the parkway, past the Pentagon, Washington Monument, Arlington Cemetery, and so on all the way to the beltway, (495),where you take the exit onto I-495 north to Maryland. You will have the Potomac River on your right the whole way from the airport to the beltway and the trick is to not take any of the many exits that take you into DC, Arlington Cemetery, the pentagon, or across any of the bridges. Look sharp here, this is a real mixing bowl, for 3 or 4 mi, with plenty of merges and exits; once you get past Key Bridge and climb the hill, navigation is comparatively easy. As soon as you exit onto I-495 you will cross the Potomac River into Maryland. In about 3 miles take the I-270 exit to Frederick, a left exit.

From the Washington Beltway, take I-270 in the direction of Frederick. Exit 270 at Exit 10, Rt.117 and Clopper Rd, after 7 or 8 miles (long before you get to Frederick). At the first Light on Clopper Rd. turn right and then turn right at the first stop sign. NIST North is at the end of this road (100 yards). If you are coming from Frederick, MD, take I-270 in the direction of Washington, DC and exit at exit 11-B, Route124 & Quince Orchard Rd. At the first light turn left onto Firstfield Rd, then go straight through two stop signs, until the road ends in the NIST North parking lot.

There are more directions and some maps (you can get here by subway and a short cab ride) at: http://csrc.nist.gov/pki/twg/twgsched.htm#nist You can also visit the NIST Visitor Info Web site.

All of the three Washington DC airports (Reagan National, Baltimore-Washington International and Dulles International Airport) are approximately equally convenient to NIST.

NIST will provide a wired (hub) connection to the Internet, so bring a cable just in case. There may or may not be an 802.11 access point.

There are a number of restaurants within easy walking distance of the meeting (lunch will be "on your own"), even an "Irish pub" about 1/4 mile away. (I wonder why they told us that? SF:-)
