Submission request to W3C (W3C Team Comment)


We, W3C member Sony Corporation hereby submit to the Consortium the following specification, comprising the following document(s) attached hereto:
  1. SMIL 2.0 Extension for Professional Multimedia Authoring - Preliminary Investigation

which collectively are referred to as "the submission". We request the submission be known as the SMIL Pro submission.

Abstract

This submission is a proposal for resuming SYMM Working Group to improve SMIL 2.0 Specification.

Originally SMIL was designed for describing interactive multimedia on the Web. However, this proposal intends to seek out the possiblity of SMIL for professional multimedia authoring. Introducing SMIL-based content authoring into professional multimedia production is also expected to enhance the possibility of SMIL-based contents on the Web.

Depicting a number of requirements for professional multimedia authoring, possible solutions are proposed by improving existing function modules and appending additional function modules. Lightweight profiles are also important to keep conformance between wide variety of authoring functionarity.

Change control

Should any changes be required to the document, we would expect future versions to be produced by W3C process upon acceptance of this proposal as a part of Recommendation-track task.

Copyrights

Sony Corporation hereby grants to the W3C, a perpetual, nonexclusive, royalty-free, world-wide right and license under any Sony Corporation copyrights in this contribution to copy, publish and distribute the contribution under the W3C document licenses.
Additionally, should the submission be used as a contribution towards a W3C Activity, Sony Corporation grants a right and license of the same scope to any derivative works prepared by the W3C and based on, or incorporating all or part of, the contribution. Sony Corporation further agrees that any derivative works of this contribution prepared by the W3C shall be solely owned by the W3C.

Trade and Service Marks

The following are common or registered marks refered to in this request or the submission: none.

Sony Corporation agrees that the trade and service marks that are associated with and identify this specific submission (SMIL Pro) will be governed by the W3C Trademark and Servicemark License .

Patents

As of today, no patent, patent application nor pending unpublished patent held by Sony Corporation which may contain Essential Claims regarding SMIL Pro has been sighted.

Suggested action

We suggest that the Consortium publish it as a note and start an activity to improve SMIL specification to fulfill the proposed requirements.
