One somewhat worrying aspect of channel configurations we just discovered  
is that a channel number doesn't always correspond to the same logical  
channel. In particular, Quad channel 2 is "surround left" while 5.1  
channel 2 is "center". For everything above mono, it seems like we can and  
should use the same indexes for the same channel.
