Peter,

The best summary of how things should work is [1]. It discusses 
information resources, real-world objects, hash URIs, 303 redirects, etc.

The term "shape" in the context of RDF was first introduced by OSLC a few 
years ago. A cleaned up version of the OSLC ResourceShape spec was 
submitted to W3C as input to this WG. [2]
