Web Annotation WG Launched!

Hi, folks–

I'm very pleased to announce that we've just launched the new W3C Web
Annotation Working Group [1]!

Thank you to everyone who has helped us create and refine the charter
[2] for the WG, including the Open Annotation CG [3], the participants
in the W3C Workshop on Annotations [4] (and its host, Hypothes.is), and
all of the Advisory Committee representatives who supported the charter.

I'm proud to say that the Web Annotation charter review broke the record
for the largest number of positive reviews for any charter review since
W3C first started using its polling system in 2003 (I don't have data
before that point) [5]. 38 W3C member organizations actively supported
forming the WG! This is an auspicious beginning.

Those of you who work for W3C member companies, who wish to join the WG,
you can ask your AC rep to add you right now [6]. If you wish to join
the WG, but don't work for a W3C member company, you may be eligible to
become an Invited Expert; email Ivan and me offlist, and we'll help you.

You don't have to join the Web Annotation WG to participate in the
technical discussions, though. All of our technical discussions, and
minutes of our telcons and f2f meetings, will be held on the
public-annotation mailing list [7].

We plan to have our first face-to-face (f2f) meeting at W3C's TPAC
meeting in Santa Clara, CA, on Tuesday, 28 October 2014 [8]. All Web
Annotation WG members are welcome to attend, and we'll let you know when
that option is ready on our registration form.

Thanks again, and I look forward to moving Web annotations forward with
you all.
