I think it was a mistake of the RDF working group to have a one-to-one correspondence between the lexical and value space. It would have been better to map XML content in the lexical space to the corresponding XML infoset, which is independent from the particular serialization. Unfortunately, I realize this just now. I guess it's too late to change it in RIF.
