SWEL'07: Ontologies and Semantic Web Services for Intelligent Distributed Educational Systems

in conjunction with AIED 2007:

The 13th International Conference on Artificial Intelligence in Education

Marina Del Rey, California, USA, July 9-13, 2007

-----------------------------------------------------------------
PAPER SUBMISSION DEADLINE: APRIL 20, 2007
-----------------------------------------------------------------
This workshop will focus on Semantic Web based knowledge representation, Grid technologies, engineering approaches and methods for the design, development and experimentation of intelligent distributed educational systems. It will discuss issues related to the use of ontologies, Semantic Web standards, distributed processes and systems enabled by Grid technologies for learning content delivery, services and knowledge components specification, effective intelligent courseware construction, and learner modeling.

SWEL'07 is the fifth in a series (http://compsci.wssu.edu/iis/swell/swel07/) following the successful workshop on Concepts and Ontologies in Web-based Educational Systems, held in conjunctions with ICCE 2002, the three sessions of SWEL'04 (in conjunction with ITS 2004, AH 2004, and ISWC 2004), the three sessions of SWEL in 2005 (in conjunction with AIED 2005, ICALT 2005, and K-CAP 2005) and SWEL'06 held in conjunction with AH 2006.

This edition has a special focus on service oriented Semantic Grid Architectures for e-Learning and is organized together with two Special Interest Groups of the European Network of Excellence Kaleidoscope (http://www.noe-kaleidoscope.org/): "Artificial Intelligence and Education" and "Learning Grid" (http://grid.noe-kaleidoscope.org/).

Accordingly, the workshop includes two special sessions:
* Session on Ontologies and Semantic Web Standards for e-Learning, and
* Session on Semantic Grid Architectures and e-Learning Services.

-----------------------------------------------------------------
Workshop goals
-----------------------------------------------------------------
* To discuss the current state-of-the-art in using Semantic Web and Grid methodologies, technologies and standards in intelligent and distributed educational systems.

* To attract the interest of the related research communities to the problems in intelligent and distributed educational systems and serve as an international platform for knowledge exchange and cooperation between researchers.

Workshop topics
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Topics of interest include, but are not restricted to:

* Session on Ontologies and Semantic Web Standards for e-Learning

-- Building ontologies for e-learning: ontology development; theoretical issues in ontology engineering.
-- Using ontologies and Semantic Web standards for structuring, representing, indexing, and retrieving shareable and interoperable learning resources (including individual and community-based annotation).
-- Using ontologies and Semantic Web standards for supporting authoring of intelligent educational systems.
-- Using Semantic Web-based contexts for adaptation and personalization of e-learning applications.
-- Towards Semantic Web-based Educational standards: new ideas, extending/mapping of existing ones, etc.
-- Real-world systems, case studies and empirical research for Semantic Web-based educational systems.

* Session on Semantic Grid Architectures and e-Learning Services

-- Semantic Grid architectures and systems for distributed intelligent e-learning.
-- Models and tools for the semantic annotation of e-learning services.
-- Methods and systems for the automatic composition of semantically described services and processes.
-- Pedagogical approaches and learning models for exploiting the potential of distributed and Grid technologies for learning.
-- Application scenarios for dynamic composition of distributed learning services using AIED and GRID technologies and techniques.

-----------------------------------------------------------------
Workshop Format
-----------------------------------------------------------------
* Keynote talk "Inside theory-aware and standards-compliant authoring system" by Riichiro Mizoguchi - 1 hour

* Paper presentation sessions - 20 minutes per paper including 5 minutes for discussion
-- Session on Ontologies and Semantic Web Standards for e-Learning
Session Chairs: Darina Dicheva & Riichiro Mizoguchi

-- Session on Semantic Grid Architectures and e-Learning Services
Session Chairs: Nicola Capuano & Andreas Harrer

* Poster and Software demonstration and discussion session - 2 hours

* Discussion Panel (panelists will be invited to present key questions for discussion and their positions on them) - 1 hour.

-----------------------------------------------------------------
Submission
-----------------------------------------------------------------
High quality research papers are encouraged, including position papers and work in progress, in order to present the current state of the art on various perspectives of intelligent and distributed educational systems within the context of educational Semantic Web and Grid. They will serve as an input for a scientific discussion to identify main problems and to set the basis for novel solutions. Participation of young researchers is encouraged.

The participants can submit full papers up to 10 pages and short and
position papers and posters 4 pages long. Paper should be formatted according to the IOS Press requirements (Authors Corner). Please look at the template provided (MS-Word template). The most important requirements are:
* Fonts - 12 point Times New Roman
* Page format - A4
* Printed area - 15.6 cm wide and 25.2 cm long
* MS Word (.doc), Portable Document Format (.pdf), or Rich Text Format (.rtf).
* Details in the authors guidelines for the main conference

Submit your papers in electronic form to: swel@crmpa.unisa.it.

Please indicate in your email the workshop session to which you are submitting your paper.

Workshop proceedings
-----------------------------------------------------------------
The accepted workshop papers will be printed in the AIED 2007 workshop proceedings. After the workshop, they will be also made available online at the SWEL workshop website. Possibilities will be investigated to publish the best workshop papers in a special issue of a refereed journal.
