My subject line was a bit imprecise. Microformats has it, allows it for one use, and will not use it for any new microformats. Rel and rev also have non-microformat uses.

So, for microformats (in SVG or in HTML/XHTML) rev will rarely be used. But there is a microformat that uses it. 

For non-microformats, the microformat faq has no relevance.

In practice, that means that the language still needs to have it, and examples will never use it.
