RE: [Action-430] Draft text explaining importance of Unicode normalization and best practices on ISSUE-67

Hi Felix,

No worries, it’s ok J

I’m in favour of the solution you propose, this technical report contains
all the necessary information and references, besides the motivation section
<http://www.w3.org/TR/charmod-norm/#sec-NormalizationMotivation>
http://www.w3.org/TR/charmod-norm/#sec-NormalizationMotivation makes clear
why it’s needed, even though normalization is a moving target as the note
you pointed out states. I believe that pointing to this specification will
definitely ensure some degree of interoperability.

Cheers,

Pablo.

Hi Pablo, all,

sorry for not discussing this yesterday.

I would resolve this by pointing to "character model of the world wide web -
normalization"
http://www.w3.org/TR/charmod-norm/
esp. the examples section
http://www.w3.org/TR/charmod-norm/#sec-NormalizationExamples
and say that as of today it is difficult to give clear recommendations with
regards to normalization on the Web, see the note on top of
http://www.w3.org/TR/2012/WD-charmod-norm-20120501/

Would that work for you and everybody? If yes I would put something in the
draft and close the action.

Best,

Felix

Hi all,

Finally we haven’t had the chance to talk about this on today’s call, anyway
anyone has any feedback on this? I haven’t heard a word from the data
categories implementers yet, what is your opinion on this?

Cheers,

Pablo.

Hi Felix, Yves, all,

I have a couple of questions regarding this action, sorry in advance if they
were discussed before, but I couldn’t find such information.

1) Unicode normalization is encouraged when processing the regex, or
the text on which the regex applies, or both?

2) Do we support any specific normal form (NFD, NFC, NFKC and NFKD) or
we just leave it to consumers choice?

3) I wanted to add a reference in the text pointing to
http://www.unicode.org/reports/tr15/ but there already exists an Unicode
reference, I don’t know whether this is a problem or not.

Cheers,
