Cross-model Linking between Different BIM Models

From Linked Building Data Community Group
  • Title: Cross-model Linking between Different BIM Models
  • Description: Use the cross-model linking between different BIM models (Architectural, Structural, MEP, ...) to help the designers to keep the models in agreement with each other during the design phase. When one model changes (a new version is created), how to (automatically) detect what has changed, and give focused notifications of the impact of the change to the parties maintaining interlinked models.
  • Domain(s): Building Models, Building Communication
  • Objectives: Enable faster and more focused cycles of cross-model changes to keep the models better in agreement with each other.
  • Stakeholders: Architect, Engineer (Structural, MEP, ...)
  • Data Requirements: Building Geometry, Building Products
  • Requirements:
  1. Functionality for link generation between involved models must be available.
  2. The IFC export functionality of the involved tools must be smooth enough to be used on a daily basis.
  • LD Benefits:
  1. Enables the distributed maintenance of different models (that is, uploading to centralized repository is not needed). The control, responsibility, and ownership of models remains clear.
  2. Linking is external to models; the content of the models need not be touched.
  3. Native models remain master models, and therefore the roundtrip problem is avoided.
  • Challenges
  1. Development of fast and accurate difference computation between model versions.
  2. Development of flexible protocols for communicating about changes (notifications, change requests, requests for voids, etc.).
  3. Empirical testing to understand best link representations, link maintenance approaches, and metadata representations.
