Success Criteria

1.1.1 Render Alternative Content: The user can choose to render any type of recognized alternative content that is present for a content element. (Level A)
Note: It is recommended that the user agent allow the user to choose whether the alternative content replaces or supplements the original content element.

Tests

Test Procedure 1

  1. Identify types of content that have alternative content (e.g. by exploring the UI or consulting Help documentation).
  2. Open a test document that contains examples of these types of content that have alternative content (e.g. images with alt text, videos with captions, abbreviations with expansions, etc.).
Sample HTML test document: Alternative Text with multiple types of alternatives on the same image or element
  3. For each example:
    • Check that the alternative content can be rendered on the screen. This could be instead of the original content (e.g. turning images off to show alt-text) or in addition to it (e.g. showing captions during a video).
    • If the content example has multiple types of alternative content (e.g. multiple caption tracks for different languages, short label and a long description for images), check that each of the different alternatives can be rendered.

Expected Results 1

  • Check #3 is true for each content example tested
