549 there should be an exception for photos.

The Working Group regards photographs as part of the "essential" exception, and will clarify this in the understanding docs.

533 We have modified the SC language and believe that it addresses your concerns (paste in new SC language).

522 We will include these image types as examples under "essential" in the understanding docs.

489 Done, changed to 3:1 for all.

468 Changed ratio to 3:1, so that should be easier. The text for graphical objects has been updated.

413 We've made substantial changes to each of these SC, we think we have addressed your comment, but please do review the latest version (paste latest).

346 Thank you, we have changed it to 3:1 for both this and the UI controls (which has been combined).

344 Through using borders, text, patterns, and other techniques there are reasonable ways to meet this. We will also be soliciting for implementations and additional feedback on the now-reduced contrast value.

181 Thank you for the comments. We will add examples as suggested to the understanding docs. Your points "a" and "b" are addressed with the latest version. Regarding complex graphics and graphics with gradients, we believe that the latest language helps ease the challenges and will look for additional feedback from Microsoft and others on this point.

550 That term has been removed in favour of more specific SC text to clarify.

528 The SC have been combined, the new short name is Graphics Contrast. Please review the new draft (paste latest)

490 Done.

437 Good point, we'll clarify in understanding as an aspect of focus indication.

NB: Caret colour can be changed: https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/CSS/caret-color

436 With the proposed SC text we are adding more specifics about how to make controls and focus visible to 3:1 ratio and we will clarify in the understanding doc.

424 We appreciate the concern, this is something that ties back to the user-agent behaviour which is a target for improvement in the 'Silver' version of the guidelines which can provide guidance for user-agents as well as authors. The SC for 2.1 can have a sufficient technique which uses the best-practice of solid lines.

Proposal for combining the graphics contrast SCs

The visual presentation of graphical information has a contrast ratio of at least 3:1 for each of the following:

 • Controls: focus indicators, borders, and visual information used to indicate state for active user interface components;
 • Graphical objects: Parts of graphics required to understand the content;

Except:

 • Sensory: Content that is primarily intended to create a specific sensory experience
 • Logotypes: Graphics that are part of a logo or brand name;
 • User Agent Control: The color(s) of the user interface component are determined by the user agent and are not modified by the author.
 • Essential: A particular presentation of the graphic is essential to the information being conveyed;

Interesting comments during the day to consider for understanding doc

 • Useful to delineate things like screenshots (low contrast things) so you know where it starts and ends.
 • Kathy from mobile TF has had several comments that we should have higher contrast for (the benefit of) people using mobile devices. A good argument for 4.5:1.
 • Include time-based media as (non) example in the Understanding doc.
 • Fine gradients like in top maps and steve's turbine analysis videos would be essential.
 • Photographs (depicting the real world) and video (ditto) are part of essential and need to be covered in Understanding for "essential"
