Two technologies to formally specify the syntax of a format:

• DTD (Document Type Definition)
  • Same as in ISO SGML standard (1986)
  • Limited power
• XML Schema
  • Still in development (2001)
  • Harder to use
  • More power (object-oriented, data types)
