This document is a NOTE made available by the W3 Consortium as a small service to the community. This indicates no endorsement of its content, nor that the Consortium has, is, or will be allocating any resources to the issues addressed by the NOTE.
This document provides a document type definition (DTD) and accompanying resources for validating HTML documents conforming to the HTML 3.2 specification together with extensions for style sheets. It is offered in response to demands for help from the public, and provides an interim solution for people who want to use the existing HTML 3.2 and CSS1 Recommendations together. It will not become a Proposed Recomendation.
This document builds upon the HTML 3.2 specification [1], and WD-style [2] which specifies mechanisms for attaching style information to HTML documents in notations such as CSS1 [3]. W3C is continuing work on drafting a proposed recommendation for a new version of HTML, code named Cougar [4].
This is a revision to NOTE-html-970421. The revised DTD supports the use of the LINK element with the TYPE attribute, and multiple media values such as MEDIA="screen, print". This brings the DTD into agreement with WD-style
This NOTE has been produced in response to people calling for way to validate documents that use style sheets but which otherwise conform to the HTML 3.2 specification. Enclosed are four components which you can extract for use with tools such as James Clark's nsgmls[5]:
This sections shows you how to use nsgmls. Another possibility would be to use one of the public validation services over the Web, or downloadable validation tools [6].
First create your HTML file which must start with the <!DOCTYPE> declaration, e.g.
<!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML Experimental 970531//EN"> <title>A title</title> <Para style="color: red">Hi Mom! |
With the test file in the same directory as the four files named above, you can then validate your file as follows:
nsgmls -s -m htmls.cat htmls.decl test.html test.html:3:13:E: there is no attribute `STYLE' test.html:3:25:E: element `PARA' not allowed here test.html:3:25:E: element `PARA' undefined test.html:3:34:E: `HTML' not finished but document ended |
This shows the output when you've absent mindedly typed "para" in place of "p" for a paragraph start tag. The "-s" option shows only the error messages, suppressing normal ouput. Correcting the above error then produces no output.
Note that it is unnecessary to include the HTML, HEAD or BODY elements as these can be safely omitted. The <!DOCTYPE> and TITLE on the otherhand are essential.
