Appendix C. SMIL 2.1 Patent Policy

SMIL 2.1 is specified by the current SYMM WG. This current SYMM WG operates under the W3C Patent Policy (05 February 2004 Version). To promote the widest adoption of Web standards, W3C seeks to issue Recommendations that can be implemented, according to this policy, on a Royalty-Free basis.

SMIL 2.0 was designed by the former SYMM WG which started in March 1999 and ended 31 December 2001. This former SYMM WG was running under former patent rules defined in the W3C Process (12 November 1998), where Members may disclose IPR claims at any time. W3C discloses to the entire Membership all IPR claims made by Members.

SMIL 2.1 is build on top of SMIL 2.0. Therefore, SMIL 2.1 specification reuses modules defined in SMIL 2.0, these parts of the specification fall under the former patent rules defined in the W3C Process (12 November 1998), where new modules fall under the W3C Patent Policy (05 February 2004 Version).

C.1 SMIL 2.1 functionalities and modules

SMIL 2.1 specification provides four classes of modules related to patent policy:

  1. New Modules are introduced and are associated to the W3C Patent Policy (PP).
  2. Former SMIL 2.0 Modules are revised allowing extended functionalities and are associated to the W3C Patent Policy (PP).
  3. Former SMIL 2.0 Modules are deprecated and replaced by new ones to allow differentiated features to be implemented in profiles without necessarily requiring support for all of the functionality of the former SMIL module. They are associated to the W3C Patent Policy (PP).
  4. Former SMIL 2.0 Modules reused without any changes are associated to the former patent rules defined in the W3C Process (12 November 1998),
