Submission request to W3C (W3C Team Comment)

We, representatives of NEC Corporation, hereby submit to the Consortium the following specification comprising the document linked below:

  1. Personalized Information Description Language (PIDL)

which collectively are referred to as "the submission". We request the submission be known as the "PIDL" submission.

Abstract

This submission describes an XML syntax for Personalized Information Description Languag (PIDL). The purpose of PIDL is to facilitate personalization of online information by providing enhanced interoperability between personalization applications. PIDL provides a common framework for applications to progressively process original contents and append personalized versions in a compact format. PIDL supports the personalization of different media (e.g. plain text, structured text, graphics, etc), multiple personalization methods (such as filtering, sorting, replacing, etc) and different delivery methods (for example SMTP, HTTP, IP-multicasting, etc).

NEC agrees that, upon adoption of this submission as a W3C Recommendation, any W3C members will be able to obtain a licence from NEC to implement and use the technology described in this submission on a royalty-free basis.

Suggested action

We suggest that the Consortium publish this proposal as is, and work on identified open and future issues both within existing working groups and in conjunction with NEC's PIDL authoring team. The NEC's PIDL authoring team has identified two areas of special interest for future work:

  1. How to define the relationship with P3P activities.
  2. How to improve the security of PIDL documents when they are delivered to the client with multicasting protocols.

Resources

To help with this work, we expect to be able to provide one non-resident document editor or a full time resident visiting engineer to the Consortium.

Change control

Should any changes be required to the document, we would expect future versions to be produced by W3C process. We expect to be able to make the above resources available to help with this work.
