Agile process for W3C working groups

Problem Statements

  • W3C members are drowning in content & lost in context.
    • Content is in WIKI's but its context is in email/IRC threads.
  • Poor visibility into work progress
  • Little to no cross-group coordination.
    • W3C staff doesn't do a good job coordinating between groups.
      • Not sure W3C staff should do this as its our responsibilities.
      • As members we must join those groups and push our agenda, however that doesn't scale?
  • Cradle to grave issue & topic tracking. Over promises & under deliveries without tracking velocity.
  • No insight into another groups work & process
  • W3C is an organization. All soft managed, no hard management.
  • Tasks and deadlines are lost in conference calls and emails
  • Deliverables lost in the dreaded WIKI's & email threads
  • Deliverables are NOT:
    • WIKI's
  • Documentation is NOT:
    • WIKI's
    • A PPT power point file
  • Context is not:
    • An email thread
    • A surge in IRC comments
  • New ideas and items are generally lost in poor in-take process.
  • W3C WG processes are still based on 1990's development processes. These processes have matured yet W3C WG processes have not.
