PICS READY FOR THE INTERNET
Press Conference: 12.00 - 14.30, Thursday 9th May 1996
Salle Alain
CNIT (next to the Grande Arche)
La Défense
PARIS
PICS (Platform for Internet Content Selection), a technology developed
by the World Wide Web Consortium is becoming the industry standard for
empowering parents to control content on the Internet. Organisations
are just starting to develop rating systems based on PICS technology for
the international market.
How will the availability of ratings systems and ratings compliant
browsers impact users of the Internet? Which content providers will rate
the content they put on the Web and when will this happen? Will
governments enforce their use in the educational community? Is this a
business opportunity for the Internet community? If so how will it
influence the dynamics of the market?
Members of the web community and industry will be discussing these
issues at the PICS press conference on Thursday 9th May at the CNIT, La
Défense and answering questions from the press on the future of ratings
systems on the Internet. New PICS compliant products and a sample
rating system will be demonstrated. Participants will take questions
following presentations from:
- Stephen Balkam, Executive Director, RSAC, Recreational Software Advisory
Council
- Tim Berners-Lee, Director of the World Wide Web Consortium and creator
of the Web
- Andrew Gray, European General Manager, CompuServe
- Martin Haeberli, Director of Technology, Netscape Communications
Corporation
- Jim Miller, Co-Chair of the PICS Technology Committee
- Paul Resnick, Co-Chair of the PICS Technology Committee
