Amounts use cases (Len)

LenB: Amount tag help present user preferred amounts - like UK/Euro/US preferences for how users see amounts (e.g. 1,000 US is 1.000 Euro, etc)

<julierawe> +1 to Lisa comment about excluding currency conversion. That is my understanding as well--that currencies are *not* part of the amount tags that APA is working on.

<LenB> $1.000 would be seen by someone in France while $1,000 would be seen by someone in the US

<julierawe> Another example: 1.000 people vs 1,000 people

LenB: Variable amount like currency or temperature wouldn't be 'live mapped' and converted. This is only presenting them in an amount format more familiar to the end user

Lenb: This HTML update (for amount) stays with the user on their browser

LenB: worth noting that this is promoted by Mozilla so there is already support from a browser vendor

LenB: There is also a proposal for JavaScript proposal related to primordials reld to value, unit and precision which would do conversions such as currency and unit conversions.

LenB: User needs include needs for keeping track of precision of measured values, currency values with denomiations, format measreuement into string represetations, convert measurements from one scale to another and localized measurements.

<julierawe> Lisa to bring up user need after LenB finishes giving the background

LenB: Note that Firefox has Unit converter baked into the address bar for angle force, length, mass, temperature and timezone.

LenB: Per our 4.5.12.1 Making Content Usable - the user need is to have metrics I know in the units I know or I get confused. Similar, MCU 3.4.1 bullet 7, talks about familiar metrics

LenB: Per Closely Related User Needs in the linked document, the User Needs from published COGA resources, we get a Theme'd system that includes derived needs (from the Theme)

Lisa: There are some cases where non-math alternatives that could be considered (like bead systems, or non-numerical tags).

Lisa: Other examples could include pictures of quantities or amounts, the effects of weather on the person in an icon/picture. An iconic converstion for something like weather could be a consideration.

julierawe: Want to note that there are some complexity related to regional, local, individual variations that should be surfaced.

LenB: There is a theme summary table near the end of the document. The table incldues category, user need, theme and citation.

julierawe: For the reader, some related examples would likely be helpful.

julierawe: Maybe worth doing this Thursday, as well as a request for review to the taskforce?
