Meeting minutes

Welcome & Announcements

<matatk> Annalu: I'm away the whole of July

janina: I'll be away from the 10th to 17th of June.

matatk: I'm away 22nd to 27th of May

Annalu: I'm also away on the 3rd and 24th of June

Charter Redux -- Janina

janina: I'm inclined to say in the charter that we'll refactor and resubmit for FPWD because our attribute is being redone in a different way. Instead of normative spec for symbol attribute, we would not do that, but may have the proposed attribute on ruby element.

matatk: That's HTML though, not a separate spec.

janina: We need to say the approach has changed significantly. We can leave it at that.

matatk: What about the registry?

janina: It's not mentioned; can add it.

janina: The purpose of the registry is to facilitate cross symbol set concept representation. (We don't care about the graphic, but we care about the concept across symbol sets.) It also facilitates authoring; I could add authoring to it. Could frame it as for authoring to start with.

<Annalu> +1

janina: Let's jump to help and support which I think is where we got well-known destinations.

janina: We need to make it clear that we're doing this work. We can say some aspects (e.g. well-known destinations) are accomplished via existing HTML specifications and are being described in note track docs. Remaining features will be examined for viability.
… and we will take a re-factored approach.

<Annalu> For completeness: Annalu is away: 3rd June, 24th June; 11th July to 13th August inclusive.

Russell: Regarding the registry, I was thinking at one point we wouldn't need it if it's Bliss Unicode but because of the spelling issue we will still need it.

janina: I think authoring is always going to need it.

Annalu: We spoke about this and the authorized vocabulary will be separate from the technical parts due to the rates at which they change over time. Bliss needs to come to decisions on how to keep the AV up to date and available.

Face to Face Outcomes and Next Steps

https://github.com/w3c/adapt/wiki/2025%E2%80%9005-Face-to-face-meeting

Minutes (day 1): https://www.w3.org/2025/05/05-adapt-minutes.html

Minutes (day 2): https://www.w3.org/2025/05/06-adapt-minutes.html

janina: Thanks Kevin for the great scribing

janina: It strikes me we have a lot of writing to do in the near term and we should parcel that out. I will offer to take over things like intros and abstracts and the encompasing pages, like our TF home page. So the path of someone coming into w3.org allows people to discover it, and it's up-to-date.

matatk: I can update the explainer to reflect the approach we've agreed on.

Annalu: I can do more use cases.

matatk: I can simplify the extension and authoring tool.

Russell: I can do anything anyone suggests.

matatk: Bigger fonts examples!

Russell: I updated some things on 240 and James replied.

Russell: There's a software package where the authors have told me they're on the verge of making it easy to do this. Will follow up with them.

Russell: This will help automate the creation of fonts from SVG images.

matatk: We need to update the registry. We gather from the workshop that it's a case of when and not if re Unicode.

Annalu: We are so close. We are working on a proposal for that.

janina: We need to start working on the 'show and tell' where we tell the wider world. (I.e. TPAC Breakouts). TPAC is happening late this year, in November.

TPAC 2025

janina: This year in Kobe, Japan
… AHG this year November, https://accessinghigherground.org/
… Nov. 17 -21, 2025 Accessible Media, Web and Technology Conference Hilton Denver City Center, Denver, Colorado

matatk: And we can plan for CSUN 2026 (March)

Russell: Reminding us, James said we can use Bliss IDs in a polyfill in this interim period (prior to Bliss in Unicode being codified and published)
