Meeting minutes

TPAC prep (sub-topics: break-out, hand-out, authoring tool) - https://www.w3.org/2023/09/TPAC/

https://lists.w3.org/Archives/Public/public-adapt/2023Jul/0004

janina: [describes plans for TPAC handout; does this sound good?]

*general approval of the concept*

matatk: We expect to use something like Bliss and ARASAAC (e.g.). Are there any existing guidelines on marking up text with symbols that you use? (We'll ask COGA also)

russell: Quite often, Bliss is used for communication, and for communication not directly between two Bliss speakers/readers.

janina: We feel that there is the level of news suitable for the New York Times (et al) here, because of the Registry and the capabilities it gives us.

russell: I'd like to run this by a Bliss expert, to do the Bliss translation. It would be interesting to see how it'd be done in ARASAAC.

janina: We have an expert we'd like to ask about that (E. A. Draffan).

russell: Could you define "procedural content"?

janina: Things like step-by-step instructions. We should include an example of this.

russell: Are there examples of "chapter markings" in non-video/multimedia settings?

janina: A Shakespeare (et al) play would be a good example.

janina: EPUB works, too.

Registry update

janina: I think we have two kinds of procedures we need to work though: (1) how does anyone add their symbols to the registry, and (2) what are the expectations/possibilities for them keeping those up to date, and how to UAs become advised that an update has occurred?

janina: On the concept side, we also need a procedure for adding concepts.

janina: I think we have the basic structure; it's how do we maintain it and keep it relevant that's missing.

matatk: Does Bliss have documentation on the procedures used to make updates (and the types of updates that can be made)? I assume concepts can be added, and symbols for a concept can be changed, and others?

russell: We recently updatd our procedures. Think I might be able to share it with you. Another process is for updating the gloss for a given concept.
… Within BCI is the BDS (Bliss Development Secretariat) which recieves requests for symbols (driven by users, and for supporting devices that have their own symbol sets that have vocab that is not in Bliss).
… They'll develop symbols to fill out the vocab for those devices. Changes than get passed by the board of directors, who check it. It then gets passed to the technical team, and I prepare the symbols, and we publish it to the web site, and notify the main Bliss users we work with.

janina: Is it conceivable that the same group would be willing to do the same process for the W3C Registry?

russell: I think it's likely.

janina: We'll still need to ensure we document the process as part of the registry spec.

russell: Roy and I were talking about having an update mechanism for when symbols get published that will automatically update the registry.

matatk: [asks about support for dark mode for the existing SVGs]

russell: Would it help to have a transparent background?

matatk: Yes, I think this + using currentColor is needed. But IIRC, we would need to embed the SVG code in the HTML page for that to work (will need to check up on that).

russell: Having them in unicode would actually help a lot here, then.

matatk: Yes!
