Update on Content Usable

Update on Content usable - CFC with APA - made it through - so far all +1s - it will close on Monday.

Send +1 if on AG to show support

Update on Joint Workshop for Maps on the Web

Joint workshop on MAPS - lisa had a action to write to the MAPS workshop - done - suggested a panel - said interested but will discuss

Lisa not sure it is the right place for coga as about standardisation - not the UI level. May not be so helpful.

<Fazio> It's a worthwhile attempt I think

Lisa is awaiting a response - David said it might be worthwhile getting involved

John K. said they did not express much interest and wondered if he could help out. Lisa felt there was interest but they wanted to bring it to their group.

David added that they were not sure whether it was the right format and they were not sure whether it was the right form.

Lisa felt they may get back with some lightning talks and felt we could work with that and introduce people to the topic. Perhaps provide a resource with some details that supports coga

David and John felt it would be helpful for them to have more information and willing to be involved

<kirkwood> +1

Betsy has joined the group for the first time and Rachael has introduced her to the group. Betsy is a speech pathologist from Houston and works with tech and accessibility for those with disabilities.

There followed introductions from the group starting with Lisa

Betsy Furler knew David Fazio and Jennie Delisi was the final person describing her background.

<Fazio> Cool stuff Jenny... Didn't know that

<Jennie> * Thanks David!

Critical terms for the glossary

<Jennie> https://docs.google.com/document/d/1AuM-06Alk5VgVgFPTsJD2DcadIrcGIRVDcNgFwPiQRc/edit#heading=h.vifybsxkua2x

Jennie and Abi have been working on the glossary and Jennie sent an email for discussion

<Jennie> Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder (ADHD).”

<Jennie> Section 6.4 Carolyn

<Jennie> Attention Deficit (Hyperactivity) Disorder

Wants to make this version of ADHD match throughout the documents.

List as the Primary heading and provide the alternatives in the text

+1

Lisa question whether the H was going to be in brackets. Jennie said that it was going to be written out in full

<Abi> From glossary: Attention -deficit (hyperactivity) disorder or (AD(H)D) involves difficulty focusing on a single task,

<LisaSeemanKest> Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder.

Lisa prefers attention impairment rather than disorder but there is also a place where it has a slash between the words

Lisa said really want to have it as attention impairment although other disabilities will also have links to attention impairments. Mentioned that there are several other ways that ADHD have been represented

Abi qualified attention impairment as not being a specific diagnosis so need to separate out the impairment from the actual ADHD glossary entry.

Lisa said that in the main document we are talking about an attention impairment maybe we need to include the concept of attention impairment in the glossary item for ADHD

John K agrees with Lisa that attention impairment needs to be highlighted as you also have memory impairment.

Jennie has suggested putting the definition into these notes.

<Jennie> Attention deficit (hyperactivity) disorder or (AD(H)D) involves difficulty focusing on a single task, focusing for longer periods, or being easily distracted. It is marked by an ongoing pattern of inattention and/or hyperactivity-impulsivity that interferes with functioning or development.

Do we need the 'or' as the acronym should just come after the title of the glossary item?

<LisaSeemanKest> AD(H)D

<Rachael> ACTION: Change ADHD to AD(H)D throughout content usable

<trackbot> Error finding 'Change'. You can review and register nicknames at <https://www.w3.org/WAI/GL/task-forces/coga/track/users>.

<Abi> "disorder or AD(H)D involves"

<kirkwood> can we say including rather than ‘or’

<Rachael> Attention deficit (hyperactivity) disorder or AD(H)D involves difficulty focusing on a single task, focusing for longer periods, or being easily distracted. It is marked by an ongoing pattern of inattention and/or hyperactivity-impulsivity that interferes with functioning or development.

<LisaSeemanKest> + 1 to john

Jennie mentioned that 'or' is needed so this is similar to other definitions

RESOLUTION: Defintion of AD(H)D approved

<Jennie> Attention -deficit (hyperactivity) disorder or (AD(H)D) involves difficulty focusing on a single task, focusing for longer periods, or being easily distracted. It is marked by an ongoing pattern of inattention and/or hyperactivity-impulsivity that interferes with functioning or development.

<Jennie> Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is characterized by some degree of impaired social behavior, communication and language abilities. This may also impact the person’s ability to regulate behavior and attention. Individuals can have a narrow range of interests and activities and they may rely on alternative communication methods. Some individuals may also experience episodes of sensory overload.

John K was worried about the way it was written and asked if any organisations had been asked to if they were happy with the definition.

Lisa agree and wondered whether it should also be linked to neurodiversity. ASD may be described as being neurodiverse - being on the spectrum comes with strengths and weaknesses and on a continuum.

Lisa suggested we may want to include this in the definition - see neurodiversity for an alternative discussion - another way of discussing this.

<Jennie> (in case people need the link again) https://docs.google.com/document/d/1AuM-06Alk5VgVgFPTsJD2DcadIrcGIRVDcNgFwPiQRc/edit#

Abi answered John's point and mentioned that she and Jennie looked at several organisations' definitions and there were some overlaps.

Welcome Betsy!

At the moment neurodiverse does not specify Autism as being part of this grouping.

John K mentioned that there has been a push to employ those with Autism due to their skills as programmers and those with neurodiversity so need to have some mention of positive skills

<kirkwood> “they may regard themselves” is a little difficult

Lisa not happy with the addition of 'regarding themselves as neurodiverse' as patronising.

<Jennie> +1 I am hearing neurodiversity being used in a broader discussion

Abi agreed with John about the employment push to be more inclusive of those with different skills including those with neurodiversity in the widest sense

<kirkwood> AD(H)D part of neurodivese spectrum

Lisa suggested that we could add the fact not everyone with ASD wants to be recognised as such and would rather have the link with neurodiversity.

Jennie appreciated this opinion but said that the glossary cannot include all the components of each disability - items need to be kept short so people can quickly return to the main document. Jennie asked if we do link to neurodiverse do we need to add this link to many of the other disabilities?

Lisa pointed out that there will be people who mind this diagnosis so we need to be careful not to offend anyone as JohnK mentioned originally.

Lisa did not think there was another group that objected to their diagnosis - if there are we need to add this to other glossay items

<Rachael> EA: Perceptions change over time. Dyslexia currently also considers itself neurodiverse in UK currently.

<Jennie> * I have to drop but Abi can take over. Have a great week!

I agree with you Rachael

Poor screen readers with all the astericks?

Clevel ARIA labelling suggested by Rachael!

<LisaSeemanKest> +1 to rachael

Here is an example of the term with several of the types of difficulties we have suggested https://neurodiversitysymposium.wordpress.com/what-is-neurodiversity/#:~:text=Neurodiversity%20is%20a%20concept%20where,%2C%20Tourette%20Syndrome%2C%20and%20others.

<Rachael> Next Step: Send out email with revised definition and note approach for approval by COGA

Rachael asked if anything else needs covering?

Abi asked if we are going to have the alternative terms directly under the title or the text?

Lisa suggested it should be at the top so it is easy to find.

Rachael suggested main term... then other terms

Abi said this could be as a subheading

Lisa and John +1 on this idea.
