Vlad: 3 week long break from last call; touch base on progress
... Vlad's action item is to identify composite TTF (deep level, unusual ) fonts, traditionally for device manufacturers for E. Asia support within Monotype
... enable testing account for w3c. Online system is very strict for font metadata. Importing the fonts into the online system is going to take some rework of the metadata. Side effect is that they only were able to import a few fonts for our testing purposes
... Asked Kamal to help with unusual layout features / complexity would be needed to test. Noto family is a good candidate for a first target. Is working on a new font with a record number of layout tricks that could be a good canididate
... Gave us a live demo via screenshare of UN Declaration of Rights in Urdu which shows off some of the feature complexity

Garret: Update
... working on dataset - it has multiple segments of text of a page with sequences of pagewalks collected from across the web
... getting permission to share results, and to share the dataset itself. Looking for good news here in the future
... on analysis side - finished a few items -- codepoint remapping has PR open for it.
... harfbuzz subsetting support - steady and good progress - most of gdef subsetting implemented
... harfbuzz - item varition stores in gdef to finish. and more gpos and gdef to implement more broadly
... support most "typical" fonts
... also working on language breakdown on dataset so we can do individual languages in the analysis. would be nice to be able to see performance diffs between languages

Vlad: For sergey's benefit, who has been following the mailing list, do you want a brief update of general direction?

sergeym: only if useful for others

Vlad: will send links to documents which have been shared in the past to Sergey to give more context
... do you see the potential end date for when we can use the analysis framework?

Garret: if you have data, it's usable today. has been running it internally. they have numbers back but have to get permission to share the results from the data they used for analysis. hoping to share something by end of march

Vlad: where are we with pagewalk sequences?

<jpamental> @sergeym This is a post I wrote introducing what we've been working on last year: https://rwt.io/typography-tips/progressive-font-enrichment-reinventing-web-font-performance

Garret: with incremental fonts, we want to model the behavior as a user uses the internet thorough the day. dataset of realistic representation. source a dataset from Google to do this internally. Trying to get permission to share anon version of data
... want to get permission to share both the analysis results and the data that produced the results
... if you have your own internal data, you can use it today
... ran some of the tests on the data from Adobe
... want to be able to do a comparison between the two datasets

Vlad: looking through emails trying to find the reference email of all docs to share, will look more offline, to get all the references in one place.
... Jason, any updates from you?

jpamental: Been working on a project for the GFonts team for a while that went live after the launch of their new UI.
... its' a VFont education website
... variablefonts.io is the site and it's gotten a lot of nice attention so far
... will be adding more to that website over time; starter kits to use the GFonts API, and get used to VFonts in general
... gathering case studies with projects that have been launching so we can give people real world metrics for performance and asseccibility
... playing with dark mode and different axes by grade - to show by doing
... whenever the GFonts team has caught up, hopefully they'll give it a mention too

Vlad: do we have any other business or updates?
... when do we think we should meet next?

Garret: maybe a few more weeks?

Vlad: we'll do March 30 and update the due date on action items
... if you have anything to share, please use group email list
... if something changes and we have a need for an earlier call, we can do it earlier
... stay happy, healthy, and social distance :)
