Issue triage

Labeling and describing guidance

<MarkMcCarthy> https://github.com/w3c/aria-practices/wiki/April-2,-2019-Meeting

mck: update on Simon's work
... 3 sprints with 3 PR in early state
... next sprint is 3 weeks
... then next sprint in early June
... review time inbetween sprints
... tackling hardest topics first

Intros for new folks on call

<jemma> Hans Hillen

Carolyn, Stefan, Hans,

<CurtBellew> my audio isn't working

<CurtBellew> i can hear you but you can't hear my

describing PR:/Labeling/describing markdown:/describing PR: https://github.com/w3c/aria-practices/blob/3e08581f6579de1f7d38849f9a0eb1951b819050/draft-labelling-describing.md

mck: what amount of info re: HTML vs. ARIA?
... think about structure and approach
... diverse audience: dev new to a11y or experienced
... be sure to describe concepts to understand pitfalls
... make comments in PR at https://github.com/w3c/aria-practices/pull/994

siri: thinks aria-label and aria-labelledby is too much and misleading

mck: in "Examples of recursive accessible name calculation

Carolyn: A label, also known as accessible name, is a name or a label used to identify the element for users of assistive technology. For example, a button’s label can be "OK".
... seems a bit redundant

mck: "identify" is a key term or is there another term

aa: maybe "designate"

Hans: likes "identify" (as in identity)

mck: first sentence to frame concept

Hans: accessible name is announced by AT

mck: ok to leave as "identify"

Stefan: what about "listitem"

mck: may be in list of candidates as "unlabelable"
... this is by spec
... W3C resource that defines "good" or "appropriate"

mck; if W3C doesn't designate, we should have at least small section that addresses

<MarkMcCarthy> https://www.w3.org/WAI/tutorials/forms/labels/

<siri> what is meeting password to join on webex?

Stefan: are variations allowed for label?

<MarkMcCarthy> https://www.w3.org/TR/WCAG20-TECHS/G131

mck: not specifically an APG topic
... Simon could write "Composition of a label" or "Composition of a name"

Carolyn: made suggestion regarding Switch example.

aa: Think "Examples of non-recursive accessible name calculation" is upside down. Give good followed by others

Hans: labeling form controls is just small part of labeling

<jemma_> I agree with Hans

<jemma_> labeling form controls should be taken care of by WAI doc

<jemma_> first

<jemma_> then ARIA APG should extend it

Future meetings and other business

Next meeting is on April 9
